The Firefly Warriors

They chase a light and then it chases them.

A sparkling light entices a young naturalist and his bothersome cousin deep into the woods. Soon the young warriors are thrust into battle to save the magic of the last firefly family.

When a mysterious light entices ten-year-old Davy and his younger cousin, Anderson, into the woods, they discover the forest is alive with wonder. Firefly magic dazzles the boys and they vow to save the insects from annihilation.

Then a fire rages in the forest. In spite of the cousins’ creative efforts to help the firefighters, the situation for the fireflies plummets from grim to dire. As the blaze consumes the fireflies’ habitat, the young warriors despair. If only there was—even one left.

EDITORIAL REVIEWS

A Texas boy and his cousin face unexpected challenges when trying to protect fireflies in this middle-grade novel. The author's touch of the supernatural in the plot is deftly balanced with the boys' lively, reality-based adventures and by strong messaging about insects and their vital place in the world's ecology, under threat from pesticides and loss of habitat. "If the insects die, then everything that needs them for food dies too," Davy says. Davy and Anderson will use their strength and ingenuity to corral frightened cattle and help firefighters' efforts to control the blaze, but will they be able to help the fireflies? Meanwhile, the successful, warm heart of the novel is found in the changing dynamic between Davy and Anderson and in subtle character-building messages about friendship, empathy, and courage in the face of fear. Appealing young male protagonists, a touch of magic, respect for nature and human connection, and plenty of action. KIRKUS

Middle grade readers interested in an ecology story of adventure, adversity, and mystery will find delight in this story of Texas boys who investigate the declining number of fireflies in The Firefly Warriors Club. As Davy contemplates creating a firefly habitat and face the special challenge of preserving their environment against forces that would decimate it, young readers receive an ecological lesson couched in a story of peers who decide to move from learning and observation to taking charge of a seemingly-impossible project. This fine tale works well on many levels. Characterization is well done, and the natural history is revealing, linked human and natural affairs and interests and Davy's own evolution in a compelling way. Middle grade readers are in for an informative treat with The Firefly Warriors Club!  MidWest Book Review by Diane Donovan

A charming and at times heartrending adventure. I highly recommend this gripping first book in a new series for middle grade boys. 5 of 5 Stars Literary Soirée

Susan Count has done an excellent job of weaving environmental issues into an action story. In addition to providing a fun read for Middle Grade readers, The Firefly Warriors Club also shows collaboration, empathy, and respect for others.Author Elena Taylor

This book is filled with adventure and fun insect facts. I say that as a person who definitely does not like bugs of just about any kind (though, I do love to watch the fireflies in my yard every summer). The information is wonderfully disseminated throughout the story. I Read Kid's Books

If you've got young children who love to read about nature, you need to introduce them to The Firefly Warriors Club! Though the book's main characters are boys, I think your girls will enjoy it just as much as your boys will.Christy's Cozy Corners

The Firefly Warriors Club by Susan Count is a fun, informative, and suspenseful Middle-Grade adventure book. Readers will learn a lot about fireflies, as well as farm life, mechanical workings, cowboy antics, and firefighting. Here's How It Happened

Abby paused to take in the barn’s beauty. A red softened with age coated its outside. The long alley lured her into the barn. Birds chirped and flitted through the cobweb-covered rafters. One horse whinnied and another answered. The stalls were small boxes with wooden doors. The hinges must be the originals. The latches looked like rusty prayers to keep in the horses. Each stall had a blue hook to hold a halter. A wheelbarrow angled to the side as if someone left off doing a disagreeable chore. The strong smell as she passed the wheelbarrow made her nose run. But what overwhelmed her were the faces looking at her as she stepped into the shaded barn. Horses and ponies of all sizes and colors.

“Wow,” she breathed, wanting to touch each one. An Appaloosa pony thrust his head over the stall door, and his nose demanded her attention. “Later, I can fall in love with you later. First, I need to get the job.”

With a surge of determination, she pulled her shoulders back and strode through the barn looking for the office. A musical voice traveled toward her. Drawing near to a room with a light on, Abby waited in the doorway for the young woman to finish her phone call.

Dressed in breeches and a long-sleeved blouse, the woman tilted her head and nodded along with the speaker. “Yes, ma’am. I’ll make sure to take care of it.”

When the woman hung up and saw Abby, surprise registered on her pretty face. “Can I help you?”

Sweat dripped from Abby’s underarms and soaked the inside of her arms. She shifted and gnawed on her upper lip. What am I doing here? I know nothing.

Editorial Reviews

  • A pony named Glory is a handful—so beautiful that she looks like a mythical creature and sweet and loving when she wants to be, but she also possesses a naughty streak that causes trouble… Young horse aficionados will fall in love with this story, which does a marvelous job of teaching readers all about equestrian care and training as well as providing an excellent role model in Abby and other strong female characters. This is a Christian-centered book featuring quotes such as “If things aren’t going as planned, it’s because God has a better plan,” but the focus is on values that transcend specific religions, such as believing in yourself and being honest, generous, and kind, even toward people whom you envy.
  • Horse-loving kids will read this novel and recognize a kindred spirit. — Kirkus

What does a horse-crazy girl with no horse of her own do to satisfy her passion? She gets a job in a local stable. And then she falls in love. Abby's Pony Love is a story that will feel familiar to any horse-crazy girl who harbors the passion (but not the opportunity) to interact with horses. Illustrator Bev Johnson adds pictorial drama to Susan Count's tale, providing a compelling cover and cameo images thereof to embellish the story as Count follows Abby's rationale for developing a strategy to satisfy her pony passion. Humor and spiritual components spice the tale with added value: "She opened her decorated box of inspirational quotes and flipped through the colored note cards. “There’s got to be something in here that will help.” A yellow card poked up and she pinched it from the others. “‘When all your eyes see is darkness, look for the light with your heart.’ ” She tossed the card on the desk and picked up another. “‘When all hope is gone, pray for a miracle.’ ” Hmm, miracles are good. “‘If things aren’t going as planned, it’s because God has a better plan.’ ” She dropped the cards back into the box. “That’s what I need—a better plan.” She stood. With a deep breath, she faced her failures. To the mirror, she said, “Be sorry. Be sincere. Beg.”

These elements combine with the horse-centric passion of the plot as Abby's favorite pony moves on and out of her life, creating further conundrums over something she loves like it's her own, even though it isn't. From differences between mares and geldings to horse tack and terminology, Count's story is steeped in the language, feel, and nature of the equine world.

Advanced elementary to early middle grade readers who love horses, and spunky girls determined to be involved with them against all odds, will relish Abby's Pony Love, which covers the topics of love, maturity, friendship, and determination with equal attention. A glossary of horse terms (and even a carrot recipe for horse treats) follows the tale, supporting its atmosphere and style with practical elements of reality.

D. Donovan, Sr. Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

"An enjoyable read as we journey to answers if Abby gets her job, what happens to Glory, and funny antics of an escaping artist horse.
A read that pulls you in and doesn't let go!" Maureen Timerman — Maureen's Musings

My girls and I have really enjoyed reading this book together. I have a horse crazy daughter, and this story has helped her hold onto hope of being around horses one day. How Abby is determined to follow her dreams through hard work in caring for horses at a barn as well as the horse owners, and still juggle the important things like family and school, I’m pleased to have that model for my daughter to read about and be inspired. This book has good morals and hard working values our young kids need to know, and it’s written in such a lovely, easy-to-read way. Every night, my daughter asks for one more page, or a little more reading time. I hope another book follows soon. Colleen Fox-Bennett

Almost from the first page, I became Abby, and experienced what she felt and accomplished. Susan writes with such an easy descriptive manner and with emotion. I love the little surprise quotes tucked into the story. Abby learns how to deal with desire, disappointment, and snobbery all the while, deciding to do the right thing. Abby’s love for Glory is contagious. This book is an easy read to a grade schooler, who will understand Abby and new readers will become immersed in this book. There is so much to love in these pages and my favorite book from Susan Count.   Susan Horton

This is a wonderful and charming book that will appeal to middle-grade kids - particularly girls. It is a good story, well told. I would love to give the author my suggestions and critique, however, I literally have nothing to add! Ms. Count's writing is appropriate and nicely presented. The illustrations are excellent. Both author and illustrator are to be commended.
"Abby's Pony Love" is a thought-provoking book that will delight young girls who love horses as well as any child who has a passion for something they can't quite get ahold of. Lots of life lessons here: accepting what one cannot change, setting goals, understanding others, and how determination and hard work pay off. And because of these lessons, this would make a good book for child and parent to each read separately so the lessons could be discussed afterward. A very enjoyable read, well-written for the intended audience.
The title and cover art would have encouraged me to buy this book. The writing style and rhythm are very comfortable. The story is exciting and enjoyable. The storyline is great for a child's book. The storyline provides several lessons for children to learn throughout the book. I also liked the ending. B.R.A.G. Medallion Award

So many things I just loved about this book. It is so relatable for any young girl with a love of horses. The experience Abby had with wanting a horse so desperately mirrored my own sister's experience as a young girl. I could almost smell the barn as I read this engaging book. The glossary, horse diagram and recipe were all a wonderful treat at the end. I'll definitely share this book along with your other published books with the young people in my life.
I could see many kids picking up this book (girls especially!) A sweet story!

Lily Makes A Way

A young girl’s ability to keep her pony is threatened by financial stress on her family.
The strain intensifies when the pony is injured requiring expensive treatment. Even if Lily could afford it, China might never walk again.

Is mild-mannered Lily strong enough to make the difficult choices? What if that means letting go of her adored pony?

Abby hugged Lily. “Whatever happens tonight—Glory and I are here to help.”

“Thanks.” As she pulled away and wiped her tears, Lily realized the time. “Agh! It’s late. I want to get home to help with dinner.” She hurried to lead China into the barn.

“Hope it turns out to be nothing. The parents calling a meeting is always bad for me. Usually, at the end of the meeting, I’m grounded.”

“I’d be okay with grounded. I couldn’t sleep last night. I’m afraid. Something is super awful wrong with my mom, and I don’t understand what Dad said about China. What if they take away China?”

“Wait. What? Take away China? Why would they do that?”

“It’s a bad feeling. I don’t know anything yet. Look here.” Lily grabbed the corner of her mouth and turned the inside of her cheek out revealing a raw spot. “That’s how worried I am.”

“Yikes. That looks like it hurts.” Abby grimaced. “If they take away China, we’ll share Glory. Mrs. Carter wouldn’t mind at all.”

“You’re the best, Abby. Losing China would ruin my life. But my mom comes first.”

“For sure.” Abby nodded knowingly. “I get it. If Mrs. Carter ever decided to move Glory somewhere else, I don’t know what I’d do. What am I saying? Of course I do. I’d move with her. Lucky for me, Mrs. Carter seems happy here and happy with our sharing.” Abby chuckled as she pulled off the saddle and bridle. “I forgot to check the water float in the big pasture trough. Have to do that. Flooding the pasture is a no-no. See you tomorrow.”

After Lily untacked and put her things away, she walked China to her stall. In a hurry, she hugged the mare. “Be a good girl and don’t you worry. Even if it’s the worst. Even if it turns out we can’t be together anymore, nothing could separate our hearts.” She inhaled the mare’s warm comforting scent as if to keep part of her forever.

Brooke’s Win-Win Pony

At home, Brooke hurried upstairs. The whole apartment smelled like yeast bread. “Grandma? You up here?”

Grandma whistled as she bent over the sink, scrubbing a fry pan.

“The doctor said I need to exercise. Will your friend let me ride her daughter’s pony in their backyard?”

“I ask her. Should be all right. She six blocks far.”
“You mean she’s six blocks away, Grandma.”
“Mom say okay?”
“Not yet. But I’m sure she will.” Brooke crossed her fingers. “You check rolls. Set table. I call friend.”

Brooke whistled as she turned on the oven light. “Perfect.” She pulled the delicately browned rolls from the oven and brushed the tops with butter. “You smell amazing.” Because she felt like being fancy, she sprinkled the rolls with sesame seeds.

She just finished setting the table when Mom came into the apartment. “Where’s your grandma?”

“On the phone in the hall. She talks a lot, and her friend talks more.” Brooke could hardly keep the delight from her voice. She didn’t want to alert Mom before the deal was done.

Grandma smiled as she put the phone down and whispered to Brooke. “She say yes.”

Exploding with joy, Brooke threw her arms high. “Yes! Yes! She said yes!”

“Mother?” Mom looked to Grandma, who shrugged. “What have you done?”

“You wanted me to exercise. Grandma’s friend said I can come ride her pony. It’s perfect. I’ll have to walk six blocks and then ride. Isn’t that perfect?”

Mom tilted her head back to look at the ceiling before she poured a glass of orange Italian sparkling water and took her seat at the table. “I’ll think about it.”

“And I’ll eat just like the doctor said. Pass the brussels sprouts, please.”

Wendy’s Perfect Pony

A talented young rider envisions her perfect horse as she shops for a jumper. With every horse she tries, she clings to the hope that it will be the one. But her dreams are dashed by disappointments, and her heart is drawn to a neglected pony.
If she gives in to her magnetic attraction to a sad, skinny gelding, she’d have to give up her show-jumping dreams.

Excerpt:

Wendy barged into Grandma’s house and threw her shoulder against the door arguing with the March winds. “I’m here!”

She chuckled at the Chinese checkers challenge already set up on a small oak table. Canary yellow marbles for her and bright blue for Grandma. She headed to the rattle of the teakettle whistle and turned off the stove.

“Grandma? I’m here.” She poured hot water into the waiting cups.

Grandma whisked in the back door with the cat cuddled under her neck, and both of them wrapped in a scarf. “Bad, bad kitty. Never letting you go outside ever again if you bother my birds.” Grandma kissed Wendy’s cheek. “Hello, dear. Game on!”

Following Grandma into the living room, Wendy carried the tea tray. “Ready for me to beat you today?”

Grandma tugged her bulky hand-knitted sweater onto her shoulder. Her silver-white hair skimmed along the teal yarn collar. “Who knows, this may be your day.” She settled into a gliding rocker and snuggled the white Persian in her lap. “You can even go first.”

For several minutes, the low rumble of the purring cat was the only sound as Wendy and Grandma made move after move.

“Every game, I learn one more of your tricks, and someday soon, it will be me saying ‘I win.’” Wendy poised her fingers over the board as she considered her best move.

“I’m happy to teach you my tricks.” Grandma fluttered her eyelashes behind her wire-rimmed glasses as she smiled over her teacup. “You are my favorite granddaughter.”

“I’m your only.”

“True. Doesn’t make you less special.” Grandma double jumped a marble into her triangle end zone.

The wall-mounted mailbox on the porch rattled.

“I’ll get it.” Wendy leaped to her feet and hurried across the room. “Thank you, Mr. George.” She reached into the box and picked out a couple envelopes and a small package.

“You’re welcome. You beat your grandma at that game yet?”

“No, sir. Not yet. I’m working on it. You got any tips?”

“Not me.” He waved as he continued on his path.
She closed the door with her hip, laid the mail beside Grandma’s teacup, and took up her position opposite the game board.

Grandma moved a marble and handed her the package. “It’s for you.”

Wendy shot her hands forward to take it. “What is it?”

“A thank you for being here. I love having you around.” At a loss for words, Wendy stared into Grandma’s eyes, knowing words between them weren’t necessary. She picked at the flap on the package until she grabbed a corner, then ripped it away, and slid out a book. “Selah’s Stolen Dream! This has been on my wish list for a year. It’s the last book in the series, so the title makes you afraid she doesn’t get her beautiful Dream back.” Wendy hugged the book. “If you are trying to win by distracting me—it’s working.”
