Thirteen-year-old Selah’s life is about as perfect as it gets. She has horsy friends at school, and on weekends, she rides her black mare on Grandpa’s farm. Training the horse to do upper-level liberty work is what makes her heart beat.

But one word can ruin a perfect life—moving.

A move would separate her from her horse, so she plots to get her name on the farm mailbox instead. She’s sure she could persuade Grandpa—except he’s overly distracted by a sheep-loving neighbor.

Determined not to let Grandpa's new sweetheart take her place in his heart, Selah puts her hope in a painted dream horse from Grandpa’s past. When she snugs up the girth and buckles on her spurs, Selah rides to win.

When moving threatens to ruin her perfect life, an equestrian child star
must buckle on her spurs to persuade Grandpa she should live at the farm
or give up her dreams and her horse.

Story Monsters Ink Magazine: "Now, into the third book of the Dream Horse Adventures series, author Susan Count does not disappoint. Her realism and heart continue to engage us, and carry us through to the end with full attention. The book breathes with life, whether in the connect with heart and dreams, with past and present, or the confusion that stirs and overflows the pot from time to time. Count captures the struggle of human emergence as gracefully as a butterfly comes to its first flight. Teen transition carries such a force capable to scatter, connect, and realign even stronger. Selah struggles through her transition, and learns the joy and importance of relationships, both human and equine." Darleen Wohlfeil, Story Monsters Ink Magazine

Selah’s Stolen Dream (Dream Horse Adventure) by Susan Count is about two young girls and one very beautiful black filly who has stolen their hearts. Sweet Dream is Selah’s heart horse. They have a special connection and they are quickly moving towards stardom, quite literally, as there’s a movie deal in the works. But, Sweet Dream is stolen right before a big showing event. There is no trace. Selah’s heartbroken, but when her beloved grandfather almost loses his life and she risks her own safety to follow a lead, she must face reality - perhaps Sweet Dream is gone forever. Emma is deaf, but she loves horses. She’s saved her earnings and birthday/Christmas money to buy her very own horse. A black filly captures her attention at a local horse auction. The two connect immediately, which is something unusual as this horse tends to be very temperamental around others. She calls her Black Velvet. The horse connection helps Emma gain confidence as well as friends. She blossoms as a person as well as a rider. Until she sees a notice at a local tack shop that suggests her horse, the one she bought fair and square with her own money, is actually a stolen horse. Emma is torn, but can she do the right thing, even if it breaks her heart?

Susan Count’s young adult novel, Selah’s Stolen Dream (Dream Horse Adventures), is more than merely another horse story. Two parallel plots develop simultaneously: Selah’s story and Emma’s. The build-up of excitement leads to a shattering climax, but each girl shows maturity beyond their years in their ability to do the hardest thing ever, realizing that it is the right thing to do. Sharing their cherished heart horse is not an option since the girls live too far apart. Events develop as Sweet Dream has a knack for attracting the attention of more than two young girls. The story is full of horse lore, mystery, adventure and the difficult decisions young people have to make as they mature. A powerful story with a compelling plot! - Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers' Favorite

Selah's Stolen Dream, is a polarizing tale of dealing with the aftermath of a stolen horse. I not only read each word, I felt them. As a victim of theft myself, I found the characters realistic in their reactions to their life-changing moment, so much so I often teared up while reading. If you want to understand what it's like to have a horse ripped from your life, the thoughts that go through your head, and how one terrible act absorbs your life--then read this book.
It is well written, riveting and a must-read for every person who loves horses. - Debi Metcalfe, President Stolen Horse International-NetPosse.com

Abby paused to take in the barn’s beauty. A red softened with age coated its outside. The long alley lured her into the barn. Birds chirped and flitted through the cobweb-covered rafters. One horse whinnied and another answered. The stalls were small boxes with wooden doors. The hinges must be the originals. The latches looked like rusty prayers to keep in the horses. Each stall had a blue hook to hold a halter. A wheelbarrow angled to the side as if someone left off doing a disagreeable chore. The strong smell as she passed the wheelbarrow made her nose run. But what overwhelmed her were the faces looking at her as she stepped into the shaded barn. Horses and ponies of all sizes and colors.

“Wow,” she breathed, wanting to touch each one. An Appaloosa pony thrust his head over the stall door, and his nose demanded her attention. “Later, I can fall in love with you later. First, I need to get the job.”

With a surge of determination, she pulled her shoulders back and strode through the barn looking for the office. A musical voice traveled toward her. Drawing near to a room with a light on, Abby waited in the doorway for the young woman to finish her phone call.

Dressed in breeches and a long-sleeved blouse, the woman tilted her head and nodded along with the speaker. “Yes, ma’am. I’ll make sure to take care of it.”

When the woman hung up and saw Abby, surprise registered on her pretty face. “Can I help you?”

Sweat dripped from Abby’s underarms and soaked the inside of her arms. She shifted and gnawed on her upper lip. What am I doing here? I know nothing.

Editorial Reviews

  • A pony named Glory is a handful—so beautiful that she looks like a mythical creature and sweet and loving when she wants to be, but she also possesses a naughty streak that causes trouble… Young horse aficionados will fall in love with this story, which does a marvelous job of teaching readers all about equestrian care and training as well as providing an excellent role model in Abby and other strong female characters. This is a Christian-centered book featuring quotes such as “If things aren’t going as planned, it’s because God has a better plan,” but the focus is on values that transcend specific religions, such as believing in yourself and being honest, generous, and kind, even toward people whom you envy.
  • Horse-loving kids will read this novel and recognize a kindred spirit. — Kirkus

What does a horse-crazy girl with no horse of her own do to satisfy her passion? She gets a job in a local stable. And then she falls in love. Abby's Pony Love is a story that will feel familiar to any horse-crazy girl who harbors the passion (but not the opportunity) to interact with horses. Illustrator Bev Johnson adds pictorial drama to Susan Count's tale, providing a compelling cover and cameo images thereof to embellish the story as Count follows Abby's rationale for developing a strategy to satisfy her pony passion. Humor and spiritual components spice the tale with added value: "She opened her decorated box of inspirational quotes and flipped through the colored note cards. “There’s got to be something in here that will help.” A yellow card poked up and she pinched it from the others. “‘When all your eyes see is darkness, look for the light with your heart.’ ” She tossed the card on the desk and picked up another. “‘When all hope is gone, pray for a miracle.’ ” Hmm, miracles are good. “‘If things aren’t going as planned, it’s because God has a better plan.’ ” She dropped the cards back into the box. “That’s what I need—a better plan.” She stood. With a deep breath, she faced her failures. To the mirror, she said, “Be sorry. Be sincere. Beg.”

These elements combine with the horse-centric passion of the plot as Abby's favorite pony moves on and out of her life, creating further conundrums over something she loves like it's her own, even though it isn't. From differences between mares and geldings to horse tack and terminology, Count's story is steeped in the language, feel, and nature of the equine world.

Advanced elementary to early middle grade readers who love horses, and spunky girls determined to be involved with them against all odds, will relish Abby's Pony Love, which covers the topics of love, maturity, friendship, and determination with equal attention. A glossary of horse terms (and even a carrot recipe for horse treats) follows the tale, supporting its atmosphere and style with practical elements of reality.

"An enjoyable read as we journey to answers if Abby gets her job, what happens to Glory, and funny antics of an escaping artist horse.
A read that pulls you in and doesn't let go!" Maureen Timerman — Maureen's Musings

My girls and I have really enjoyed reading this book together. I have a horse crazy daughter, and this story has helped her hold onto hope of being around horses one day. How Abby is determined to follow her dreams through hard work in caring for horses at a barn as well as the horse owners, and still juggle the important things like family and school, I’m pleased to have that model for my daughter to read about and be inspired. This book has good morals and hard working values our young kids need to know, and it’s written in such a lovely, easy-to-read way. Every night, my daughter asks for one more page, or a little more reading time. I hope another book follows soon. Colleen Fox-Bennett

Almost from the first page, I became Abby, and experienced what she felt and accomplished. Susan writes with such an easy descriptive manner and with emotion. I love the little surprise quotes tucked into the story. Abby learns how to deal with desire, disappointment, and snobbery all the while, deciding to do the right thing. Abby’s love for Glory is contagious. This book is an easy read to a grade schooler, who will understand Abby and new readers will become immersed in this book. There is so much to love in these pages and my favorite book from Susan Count.   Susan Horton

This is a wonderful and charming book that will appeal to middle-grade kids - particularly girls. It is a good story, well told. I would love to give the author my suggestions and critique, however, I literally have nothing to add! Ms. Count's writing is appropriate and nicely presented. The illustrations are excellent. Both author and illustrator are to be commended.
"Abby's Pony Love" is a thought-provoking book that will delight young girls who love horses as well as any child who has a passion for something they can't quite get ahold of. Lots of life lessons here: accepting what one cannot change, setting goals, understanding others, and how determination and hard work pay off. And because of these lessons, this would make a good book for child and parent to each read separately so the lessons could be discussed afterward. A very enjoyable read, well-written for the intended audience.
The title and cover art would have encouraged me to buy this book. The writing style and rhythm are very comfortable. The story is exciting and enjoyable. The storyline is great for a child's book. The storyline provides several lessons for children to learn throughout the book. I also liked the ending. B.R.A.G. Medallion Award

So many things I just loved about this book. It is so relatable for any young girl with a love of horses. The experience Abby had with wanting a horse so desperately mirrored my own sister's experience as a young girl. I could almost smell the barn as I read this engaging book. The glossary, horse diagram and recipe were all a wonderful treat at the end. I'll definitely share this book along with your other published books with the young people in my life.
I could see many kids picking up this book (girls especially!) A sweet story!

Review — Abby’s Pony Love

Little girls love horses and Abby is no exception. Unlike the wealthy kids at the nearby stables, with parents who can buy them ponies and pay for lessons, Abby has to pursue her love of horses on her own. Abby’s parents my not have the means to buy her a horse, but they do support her in other ways, allowing her to take on a job at the local stables. But once there, Abby falls in love with someone else’s horse, and working around these beautiful animals is no longer enough.

Secretly naming the palomino mare Glory, Abby overlooks all the pony’s antics, of which there are many, believing her to be the most amazing horse in the world. Something every little girl needs, and every horse should have.

Unfortunately, life at the barn isn’t simple. If Glory (named Starlet by her owner) doesn’t behave, she may have to move to another stables. Or worse yet, the real owner may decide she’s too much trouble, and sell her to someone else. Someone who will take Glory far away where Abby will never see her again.

Abby desperately searches for a solution. She wants nothing else in life but to make Glory her own. But how can she possibly earn enough money to buy her dream horse? And what should she do about Glory’s owner? A girl she wants to see fail, and yet needs at the same time.

A sweet tale about a girl’s love for horses, working hard to achieve a goal, and finding solutions to difficult problems, Abby’s Pony Love is a terrific read. It’s perfect for young girls who understand the dream of being owned by a horse, and parents who remember what it feels like to want something with their whole heart.

My golden boy Jasper approves.

Lily Makes A Way

A young girl’s ability to keep her pony is threatened by financial stress on her family.
The strain intensifies when the pony is injured requiring expensive treatment. Even if Lily could afford it, China might never walk again.

Is mild-mannered Lily strong enough to make the difficult choices? What if that means letting go of her adored pony?

Abby hugged Lily. “Whatever happens tonight—Glory and I are here to help.”

“Thanks.” As she pulled away and wiped her tears, Lily realized the time. “Agh! It’s late. I want to get home to help with dinner.” She hurried to lead China into the barn.

“Hope it turns out to be nothing. The parents calling a meeting is always bad for me. Usually, at the end of the meeting, I’m grounded.”

“I’d be okay with grounded. I couldn’t sleep last night. I’m afraid. Something is super awful wrong with my mom, and I don’t understand what Dad said about China. What if they take away China?”

“Wait. What? Take away China? Why would they do that?”

“It’s a bad feeling. I don’t know anything yet. Look here.” Lily grabbed the corner of her mouth and turned the inside of her cheek out revealing a raw spot. “That’s how worried I am.”

“Yikes. That looks like it hurts.” Abby grimaced. “If they take away China, we’ll share Glory. Mrs. Carter wouldn’t mind at all.”

“You’re the best, Abby. Losing China would ruin my life. But my mom comes first.”

“For sure.” Abby nodded knowingly. “I get it. If Mrs. Carter ever decided to move Glory somewhere else, I don’t know what I’d do. What am I saying? Of course I do. I’d move with her. Lucky for me, Mrs. Carter seems happy here and happy with our sharing.” Abby chuckled as she pulled off the saddle and bridle. “I forgot to check the water float in the big pasture trough. Have to do that. Flooding the pasture is a no-no. See you tomorrow.”

After Lily untacked and put her things away, she walked China to her stall. In a hurry, she hugged the mare. “Be a good girl and don’t you worry. Even if it’s the worst. Even if it turns out we can’t be together anymore, nothing could separate our hearts.” She inhaled the mare’s warm comforting scent as if to keep part of her forever.

Brooke’s Win-Win Pony

At home, Brooke hurried upstairs. The whole apartment smelled like yeast bread. “Grandma? You up here?”

Grandma whistled as she bent over the sink, scrubbing a fry pan.

“The doctor said I need to exercise. Will your friend let me ride her daughter’s pony in their backyard?”

“I ask her. Should be all right. She six blocks far.”
“You mean she’s six blocks away, Grandma.”
“Mom say okay?”
“Not yet. But I’m sure she will.” Brooke crossed her fingers. “You check rolls. Set table. I call friend.”

Brooke whistled as she turned on the oven light. “Perfect.” She pulled the delicately browned rolls from the oven and brushed the tops with butter. “You smell amazing.” Because she felt like being fancy, she sprinkled the rolls with sesame seeds.

She just finished setting the table when Mom came into the apartment. “Where’s your grandma?”

“On the phone in the hall. She talks a lot, and her friend talks more.” Brooke could hardly keep the delight from her voice. She didn’t want to alert Mom before the deal was done.

Grandma smiled as she put the phone down and whispered to Brooke. “She say yes.”

Exploding with joy, Brooke threw her arms high. “Yes! Yes! She said yes!”

“Mother?” Mom looked to Grandma, who shrugged. “What have you done?”

“You wanted me to exercise. Grandma’s friend said I can come ride her pony. It’s perfect. I’ll have to walk six blocks and then ride. Isn’t that perfect?”

Mom tilted her head back to look at the ceiling before she poured a glass of orange Italian sparkling water and took her seat at the table. “I’ll think about it.”

“And I’ll eat just like the doctor said. Pass the brussels sprouts, please.”
